As I was born in Sarawak in Borneo, and having most of my relatives there, I thought what better way to celebrate my roots by having a Borneo jungle wedding. A fascinating experience as Alice and I wore traditional outfits, was ceremonially blessed in the traditional Iban (the tribe my family are called!)way, shared out the local alcoholic drink called “tuak”(tu-wak), and finally ended with the Iban dance called “ngagat(na-ghat)”.
Our trip to Betong wasn’t just for the blessing but also coincided with the traditional harvest festival called the Gawai, which is a yearly celebration. Lots of drinking and dancing during our time in Betong, Sawarak, and the photos can only give a slight insight into longhouse life.
